question
Hi Dennis,
Can you explain this construction in James 1:25? Is τὸν introducing an appositive?
James 1:25 (NA27)
Response
Yes. Just as our project’s Grammatical Commentary has a set of derelativizer constructions, it also has a set of dearticularizer constructions, and τὸν τῆς with article followed by genitive is one of them. τὸν becomes a mini appositive = the one that. “Looking into the perfect Law, the one providing true freedom.” I can give you a list of all such constructions if you are interested.
